In the fall of 2014, I devoted a semester to painting plein air landscapes. It was somewhat of an experimental semester as I explored painting almost exclusively with a palette knife, practiced working with a limited palette, and worked with new paint/colors modeled after Richard Schmid’s palette.
Some books about painting landscapes that I read in the Fall of 2014 that I highly recommend:
- Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting by John F. Carlson
- Landscape Painting Inside & Out by Kevin MacPherson
- Edgar Payne’s Composition of Outdoor Painting by Ian Roberts
- Painting Better Landscapes: Specific Ways to Improve Your Oils by Margaret Kessler
- Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice by Mitchell Albala
- Richard Schmid Paints Landscapes by Richard Schmid
- Creating Impressionist Landscapes in Oil by Colley Whisson
